DUNE TALK: Dune Movie Review, Episode 1 – Overall Reactions

We’re so excited to bring you all this week’s Dune Talk show, the first episode following the movie’s domestic premiere! This officially kicks off our review sub-series, where we’ll be breaking down the movie scene-by-scene and discussing all the insights we’ve gotten out of multiple viewings. If you haven’t watched the movie yet yourself, first check out my spoiler-free reaction to last week’s Dune press screening.

This week it’s Johnny’s turn to share his overall first impressions, after watching the movie both in the theater, on opening night, and subsequently streaming it on HBO Max. We also start diving into the thematic importance of dreams in Dune. As noted, we are not avoiding spoilers from this point. Box office projections are also addressed, though we keep it short—all three hosts are heading out to watch the film (again)!

This podcast (47 minutes) is available below in both video and audio formats. Enjoy and spread the word to fellow Dune fans!

Show Notes

News stories covered in the ‘Dune Movie News’ segment of today’s show:

  1. Dune has started its domestic theatrical run, with an impressive $5.1M from Thursday night preview screenings! The movie is well on track to exceed initial industry projections ($30-35M) for the weekend and, combined with promising openings in other countries—including China and United Kingdom—will already exceed a $200M cumulative total gross at the global box office, by this Sunday.
  1. We’ve already heard how director Denis Villeneuve talks with confidence about returning to film Dune: Part Two. Ahead of their quarterly earnings report, the leadership of WarnerMedia have also openly expressed the same sentiment. While the movie is not officially green-lit, at this time, it’s clear that studios fully stand behind the production and know how special this series is.
