One category conspicuous by its absence is “Best Original Score”, for which Hans Zimmer won his second Oscar Award with Dune: Part One. This appears to be due to the Academy’s rules that limit the amount of music that can be reused from previous films in the series.
In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must consist of more than 80% newly composed music which does not contain any pre-existing themes borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.
94th Academy Awards® Rules
It is possible that Zimmer’s score could still be considered for other awards, such as the Golden Globes and BAFTA.
