Interview with Illustrator Sarah Rain Hammond
Sarah Rain Hammond was kind enough to talk to us about her experience creating the Dune: Bene Gesserit Tarot Deck and Guide.
What was the process of working with the writer Minerva Siegel on the deck?
“When I started on the cards, Minerva had already assigned each one to its character or scene along with an outline of why that scene was chosen. Having that context from the start was essential to understanding her vision. When a scene was tricky to translate visually, I’d sometimes need to reimagine it or reconstruct the setting entirely to stay true to what she intended. So in many ways the final result ended up being a collaboration of everyone involved!”
How easy was it to adapt the movies into the tarot cards?
“Not easy but incredibly rewarding! The films lean brutalist and minimal with lots of texture, light, and negative space which is the opposite of how tarot usually communicates through imagery. My biggest challenge was constantly reimagining wide, sprawling shots into a tall, narrow card. That meant a lot of the time I was digging through behind-the-scenes stills just to find an angle that didn’t exist in the film itself. I’m a sucker for detail and fashion, so I probably spent an embarrassing number of hours studying stillsuits and mannequin displays to get every card as accurate as I could.”
